Who We Are

The Gospel

Riverside Baptist Church exists to worship God and tell people about the grace of God available to us through his Son, Jesus Christ. This message is commonly called the gospel, which means good news.

We want you to hear the good news of God’s love and respond to God’s invitation to know Him. Below is how we summarize this message including the necessary response to it…

God is the Creator, He made you, and He is King of the universe, He is in charge of everything, but He’s not a tyrant. He oversees his creation as a kind and generous Father. Therefore, as our Creator, He is to be loved, and as our King, He is to be obeyed.

As a display of his power and love, He created mankind in his own image so that we would magnify His glory and worship Him in a perfect relationship with Him. Our greatest joy and delight comes from fulfilling this purpose of knowing Him and making Him known to others.

But God’s first two people, Adam and Eve, sinned by disobeying God. They thought they knew what was good for them better than He did. There were two horrible consequences to that rebellious decision.

First, they were removed from a loving relationship with God and placed under his just wrath. God is holy, and He is just. When they sinned, He gave them what they wanted and ultimately what they deserved: separation and death.

Second, because of that sin, now all people are born as sinners. All of us choose to go our own way and sin against God. There is no one in God’s creation who has not sinned. And because we all sin, we too are separated from God and destined for death and hell. This is the bad news.

But there is good news! God in his love for his people made one way, and only one way, for us to be saved from his wrath: Jesus.

As great as God’s love is, He cannot ignore his holy justice. He cannot simply overlook our sins; they must be punished. So, God sent his Son Jesus to come to earth to take away our sin, endure our punishment in our place, and grant us eternal life. Jesus took on the form of a man and lived the perfect, obedient life that we cannot live. Jesus willingly suffered and died a horrible death on the cross, taking our place. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead and now lives with his Father in heaven.

Therefore, God’s holiness is magnified by punishing our sin in our Substitute, and God’s love is multiplied by granting relationship and eternal life to us when we certainly do not deserve it!

What great news! God will forgive your sins and grant you eternal life with Him!

The only thing left is how we have this gift of salvation and eternal life count for us. This free gift from God cannot be earned. No amount of good works on our part will ever make up for all our sins or gain enough favor from Him. Jesus did all the good works for us.

What is required of us then is to repent of our sin and believe in Jesus. To repent means to turn away from our sinful lifestyle of ignoring God and turn toward Jesus as our only hope. We believe the promise of God that He will forgive our sins through Christ when we turn to Him. We believe the promise of God that He will grant us eternal life. We believe by trusting and resting and receiving God’s grace.

That’s it. Simple enough to say, but impossible to do apart from God’s help.

Today, can be your day of salvation. Would you repent of your sin and believe in Jesus as your Savior and Lord?
